The Detroit Pistons will enter the NBA offseason with a need to make some changes to their roster to accelerate a rebuild. Finding a trade suitor for Blake Griffin would go a long way to help this process.
It will be difficult for the Pistons to command substantial trade value for Griffin when considering the circumstances. He appeared in just 18 games before undergoing season-ending surgery of his left knee— creating an intriguing ‘buy-low’ opportunity for a team.
The level of impact Griffin provided the Pistons during the 18 games that he played this season was underwhelming. He averaged 15.5 points (35.2%, 24.3% 3P), 4.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 28.4 minutes within this period. The season prior was the best of his NBA career though.
From a contract standpoint, Griffin is set to earn $36.81 million next season and has a player option worth $38.96 million for 2021-22. Coupled with durability concerns, the Pistons would be best suited to move on from him in a trade to begin the rebuilding process.
