Rationale for Boston Celtics
The best course of action for the Boston Celtics in the offseason appears to be to move on from Gordon Hayward to reconfigure the roster. There has also a need to find a better answer at the center position since the departure of Al Horford.
The Celtics would benefit substantially by utilizing a substantial cap space slot on an elite rim protector like Rudy Gobert as opposed to a wing that is the team’s third-best. It’s a better way to optimize the level of impact the team is receiving in key spots.
In the Eastern Conference, it’s important to have rim protection when considering teams like the Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, and Philadelphia 76ers all have interior oriented franchise-players that like to get to the rim.
Gobert would also provide the Celtics with a highly efficient play finishing option near the basket with his massive wingspan. Additionally, he would provide an impactful presence as a rebounder on both ends of the floor.
The main concerns would just be whether Gobert would want to stay long-term with the Celtics, and how expensive it would be to retain his services. If Boston is fine with handing him out a big contract extension, then this is the right move to make.
