Dallas Mavericks will be at ‘head of line’ to sign Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Dallas Mavericks have managed to build an impressive young duo with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. Could they add two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo when his current contract with the Milwaukee Bucks finishes?

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Mavericks will ‘be at the head of the line’ to sign Antetokuonmpo when he is a free agent next offseason.

“The Dallas Mavericks are gonna be at the head of the line in pursuing Giannis. They want to have a 3rd star,” said Brian Windhorst on The Jump.

Dallas is not expected to make any major additions in free agency this offseason to keep their salary cap space open for Antetokounmpo.

“They want to keep their books clear for 2021,” Windhorst said. “I wouldn’t expect them to add any major free agents this year. They’re going to wait.”

The thought of the Mavericks being able to sign Antetkounmpo is a fascinating one. He’d have a very similar floor spacing situation as he does currently with the Bucks since Kristaps Porzingis can shoot from deep off the three-point line.

The key difference or Antetokonmpo would be the elite facilitation and superstar scoring ability that Luka Doncic brings to the table. At just 21-years-old, he earned a spot on the All-NBA First Team and was a serious contender for the MVP award.

There is a real need for the Mavericks to improve on defense and there would be no better way to do so than adding the versatile Giannis Antetokounmpo. His impact as a weak-side help defender would help cover up key mistakes out on the perimeter.
