Knicks Receive: Russell Westbrook
Rockets Receive: RJ Barrett, Dennis Smith Jr., Elfrid Payton, Wayne Ellington, Taj Gibson, and 2020 first-round pick.
The Knicks have several young guards with potential, which on paper is a good position to be in. However, the young guards have not translated into wins, which should give the Knicks a reason to reevaluate.
In this deal, the Knicks would most notably part with Barrett, the former No. 3 overall pick, and his potential production in the coming years. New York would also be moving on from Smith Jr., Payton, Ellington and Gibson to make salaries match.
Any trade to acquire Westbrook will include several players, unless in the case of Westbrook’s trade for Chris Paul last year, two stars have similarly huge contracts.
This trade would infuse the Rockets with younger depth to put around James Harden, and it would signal a win-now move for the Knicks, who have continually been spurned in free agency lately.
