The Trade:
Warriors Receive: Joel Embiid
76ers Receive: Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, Eric Paschall, 2020 No. 2 overall pick, 2021 First-Round Pick via Minnesota, 2023 First-Round Pick
Wow, this is the definition of a blockbuster and fans on both sides will probably have problems. However, this move could make a ton of sense for both parties involved.
For the Warriors, acquiring a star center would be the missing piece that they have been needing for years. He can stretch the floor, score inside, and create his own looks as a big. That would fit nicely alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
As for the 76ers, this trade would keep Ben Simmons on the roster and add three quality role players around him in Wiggins, Poole, and Paschall. The No. 2 overall pick would be intriguing, the T-Wolves’ 2021 first-round pick is intriguing as well, and another first-round pick in 2023 puts the cherry on top of this deal.
Both teams would end up profiting from their respective returns from this deal.
Trading Embiid would not be an easy decision for the 76ers. However, with the growing likelihood that Philly will hire Mike D’Antoni as their new head coach, moving Embiid makes sense. Bringing in more players that would fit the freewheeling system might be the right move.
Obviously, no one that roots for the 76ers is going to love the idea of moving on from a star. Joel Embiid is a dominant big and losing him would be rough. But, if the move adds more players that helps them compete, no one will be upset.
Expect to hear quite a few rumors surrounding both the Warriors and the 76ers this offseason. This trade may never be discussed, but it could make perfect sense. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Embiid would be fun to watch.
