It has been a tremendous regular season for the Los Angeles Lakers but that’s not enough. For any head coach that has a duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, it’s crucial to win the NBA Finals or come as close as possible to getting it done.

There will be genuine challengers to the Lakers en route of a potential NBA Finals appearance. For starters, a potential matchup with a team like the Clippers would require genuinely successful coaching throughout the series given the supporting cast around Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

If the Lakers were to come up short of winning the NBA Finals, there is real potential for negative narratives to build. Let’s not forget, Vogel couldn’t get the job done against James with the Indiana Pacers. If he can’t win with him, he could very well get labeled as a coach that can’t win it all.

There was speculation about Jason Kidd taking over the head coaching role if Vogel wasn’t able to get to the job done. The success the Lakers have achieved has silenced that, but Los Angeles would be able to turn to that option if they felt Vogel wasn’t enough.
