Re-Signing Nikola Jokic

The Nuggets extended their franchise player to a max, five-year, $148M deal. I don’t think I have to say much about this one. Jokic is a top-five center in the NBA; a quintessential talent at that. His innate ability to find open teammates elevates the Nuggets’ offense to another level. His shooting, ball handling, and post scoring ability make him a nightmare for opposing coaches to game plan against. The Nuggets have their franchise centerpiece locked up for the next five years.

Grade: A+

Re-Signing Will Barton

The move to re-sign Barton initially put a significant dent in the Nuggets’ cap situation, putting them over the luxury tax. However, Denver has made some moves to get under the tax, boosting the grade on this move. Barton’s four-year, $54M deal is a fair one in this market. Barton is incredibly valuable to the Nuggets and keeping their core together may be the best strategy to compete in the uber-competitive West.

Barton averaged 15.7 points, five boards, and 4.1 assists last season, shooting 45.2% from the field and 37% from three. He is a versatile offensive player, with the ability to play some point guard and heavy minutes on the wing. His energy, athleticism and defensive ability make him a valuable piece for the Nuggets and one they could not afford to lose.

Grade: B+

Re-Signing Torrey Craig

The Nuggets re-signed Craig to a two-year, $4.4M contract. Craig played last season on a two-way deal, after impressing in Summer League. Appearing in 39 games for the big club last year, Craig averaged 4.2 points and 3.3 boards per game. Craig doesn’t shoot the three well (29.3%), but he has a very good mid-range game. Most importantly, he provides great energy on the defensive end and began to emerge as a defensive stopper towards the end of the season. His hard work and drive make him a valuable locker room presence as well. The Nuggets did well keeping Craig around, as they potentially have a valuable two-way wing on their hands.
